Pattaya. All about relaxation and entertainment

general information

The government of the province of the same name with a population of about 840 thousand people is located in Chonburi. However, the construction of the new Suvanna Bhum International Airport between Bangkok and Chonburi has dramatically changed living conditions in the city, as thousands of Suvan Na Bhum employees seek housing here. In addition, the Eastern Seabord Project, a huge free trade zone with a deep-water harbor, has in recent years put its stamp on an already glamorous cityscape.

The port of Chonburi is too shallow to be of much economic importance. But that is precisely why it was and remains a busy fishing harbor, from where fishermen take their boats out to the open sea in the evening twilight. To the south of the city there are large oyster nurseries, the largest in all of Thailand.

Sugar cane and cassava grow in the surrounding area, the tubers of which, when laid out to dry, emit a characteristic pungent odor. The resulting starchy grain, tapioca, is used for baking and also for making glue. It is exported to many countries and is one of Thailand's most important agricultural products.

What to see

Wat Sam Yot

Near the very center of the city, Wat Sam Yot stands on a hill with a 34 m tall statue depicting Buddha at the moment of enlightenment. A wide panorama of the city opens from the hill.

Wat Intharam, Wat Thamnimit

Of the many richly decorated, but not particularly artisticly significant temple complexes of Chonburi, we will mention only two of the oldest: the Intharam and Thamnimit wats. Wat Intharam near the old market in the city center was built at the end of the Ayutthaya era, under King Thaksin. During the Rattanokosin (or Bangkok) era, the temple was restored many times, so that almost nothing remained of its original appearance. Nevertheless, the figured stucco molding on the roof and the porcelain mosaic on the window arches are interesting. Inside the boat, beautiful wall paintings in the early Bangkok style have been preserved, as well as numerous, including very rare, statues of Buddha. The nearby Wat Thamnimit is also worth a visit. His vi-khana contains a colossal statue of Buddha in a boat. According to legend, Buddha traveled by ship to the Indian city of Vaishali, where with his mercy and compassion he cured many people of cholera.

Ceremonial preparations for the big buffalo race, held every year in October, begin in the courtyard of Wat Intharam. Thousands of people flock to see this spectacle.

Khaukhieu Open Zoo

Working hours:
daily 8.00 - 18.00
paid entrance

Not far from Chonburi there is an entrance to the Kha Ukhieu Natural Park, where on an area of 145 square meters. m you can see one hundred and thirty protected species of animals, including monkeys, butterflies and even leopards. The aviarium contains four thousand species of Asian birds, including very rare ones. The six white tigers that live here are a gift from the Memphis Zoo in Tennessee, USA. Part of the park is closed to visitors, since here animals are given the opportunity to move completely freely, and most importantly, to reproduce.

Golf course

On the road leading to the zoo, on a picturesque cliff in the village of Bang Saen, there is an eighteen-hole golf course - one of the largest and most beautiful in Thailand.

Angsila

7 km south of Chonburi is the town of Angsila (Stone Bowl), named after the rocks protruding into the sea. Angsila is famous for its production of stone kitchen utensils, including mortars of all sizes.

Bangsaeng

If you take National Highway 3 further south, you soon arrive at the beach resort of Bang Saen. Residents of the capital come here, especially on weekends, to relax on the hopelessly crowded beaches - and you won’t find a place in a hotel at this time either. A kilometer from the sea, in the courtyard of Bangkok Education College, the largest aquarium in Thailand is located.

Working hours:
Tue.-Fri. 8.00-17.00,
Sat.-Sun. 8.30-16.30.
paid entrance

Look-Sam-Po

The Chinese temple in the form of a ship - Luk Sam Po - was erected in memory of the disaster: a ship with Chinese immigrants off the coast of Thailand was caught in a strong storm and sank. The only survivor of the shipwreck, in gratitude, built a temple and founded a monastic order with very strict rules. Around the central pagoda are small houses, symbolizing the ship's cabins. Several monks and nuns still live there. The dwellings of the monks in the shape of fishing boats located outside the sanctuary are also interesting. The monastery also has two replicas of Thailand's largest chedi from Nakhon Pathom. Today, this sanctuary is open to Buddhists from all over the world who come to meditate and to visitors.

Sriracha

About 20 km south of Chonburi, on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand, lies the rapidly growing city of Siracha. It is famous for the very hot chili sauce that is produced here for the entire country. Numerous restaurants serve first-class seafood. In the evening hours from here it is pleasant to go to the picturesque Loy Peninsula, where a small monastery is located.

Xichang

From Sirachi fishing harbor you can go to Sichang Island (6 flights per day; travel time about 30 minutes). On the island in the 19th century. there was a large transshipment port, but now the Sichang harbor is important only for fishermen. The ruins of the summer residence of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) on the highest point of the island are interesting. Since Xichang was occupied by the French in 1893, the palace was never completely completed. At the southern tip of the island stands a lone chedi, left over from the At-sadangnimit temple. Two temples were built on the steep hillside. One of them is visible from afar thanks to the yellow Buddha statue. The second, Chinese, temple offers an excellent view of the busy harbor, which is worth the long climb up the five hundred steps.

How to get there

  • By car
from Bangkok via national highway No. 3 (80 km).
  • By bus
from Bangkok from the Eastern Bus Station (once per hour).

Daeng Beach is one of the smallest and most deserted beaches on Koh Larn.

It is located in the north of the island and does not have a developed infrastructure - there is only one cafe on the territory, and there is also a rental of sun loungers and umbrellas. The beach shore is sandy, about 200 meters long and 30-40 meters wide. It is better to swim here during high tides, as during low tides the bottom becomes too dirty to be seen.

The sign indicating the path to the beach says Ta-Yaiy Beach, but on the island of Koh Larn everyone calls it Daeng Beach. Daeng Beach is a beautiful and calm place where you can enjoy picturesque nature and silence.

Tawaen Beach

Tawaen Beach is the most crowded and largest beach on Koh Larn.

Ferries sail to Tawaen Pier every day from Pattaya and return back after midnight. There are many free sun loungers on the beach, and umbrellas and towels are available for rental. On the shore of Tawaen there are small shops that sell clothes - swimsuits, sunglasses, pareos and summer shoes. The beach has showers and toilets, many restaurants and cafes serving European and Thai cuisine.

On the territory there are pharmacies open until the evening, a police station and a first-aid post. Popular entertainment options on Tawaen include diving, banana boat rides, jet skis and scooters. The beach has smooth golden sand without pebbles or corals, which eliminates the risk of injury.

Thian Beach

Thian Beach is one of the most picturesque and secluded beaches on Koh Larn.

During the low season there are usually few visitors here, so from April to October the place is empty or becomes a haven for couples. The territory of Thian Beach is equipped with all amenities: there are shops, souvenir shops and cafes, showers and picnic areas. The beach offers rental of umbrellas, sun loungers and beach accessories.

The water here is clean and azure in color, so many tourists like to go diving on Thian Beach and enjoy the beauty of the aquatic world. It is believed that off the coast of Thian Beach there are the most beautiful coral reefs on the entire island of Koh Larn and a large number of exotic fish.

Thong Lang Beach

Thong Lang is often compared to Tawaen, as it is also a large and well-equipped beach.

Thong Lang is located near Tawaen, but is not as popular as its neighbor. There are many amenities on the beach: sun loungers, umbrellas, showers, awnings, grocery stores and cafes. Here you can rent a scooter or motorbike, buy or rent sports equipment, and also stay overnight in one of the small bungalows.

There is a steep road leading to the beach, and the bottom of the shore is too rocky - these are perhaps the only disadvantages of Thong Lang. Tourists here are usually Chinese, but sometimes there are also Russian vacationers.

Bangsaen Beach

This little piece of paradise is hidden from tourist attention. Bangsaen Beach, located an hour's drive from Bangkok and 10 kilometers from the provincial capital Chonburi, is visited mainly on weekends by Thai families seeking relaxation from everyday work. And once upon a time it was quite a popular place among the elite of Bangkok.

There are many bars and restaurants with a relaxed atmosphere. Local vendors offer fresh fruit, seafood and snacks, and you can rent sunbeds, colorful umbrellas and other beach accessories. There is a shower on site. Inexpensive hotels and bungalows are quite capable of satisfying those who want to stay here longer than one day.

Nearby attractions include the Marine Aquarium and Museum, as well as an ancient temple. The city hosts a weekly Sunday fair, which also operates at night, when prices are much lower than during the day.

Sights of Chonburi Province

Arriving in Pattaya for the first time, we, without exaggeration, were shocked by everything around us. An endless stream of traffic, noise, heat, smells, crowds of people of different nationalities. When we saw the central beach, sad thoughts and slight disappointment appeared, because I wanted a beautiful sea and sand...

But soon, we began to really like this unusual atmosphere and now we love visiting Pattaya with the whole family. We are interested in everything - cuisine, sights, entertainment, excursions. We are happy to share with you useful information and stories about various places and publish materials useful for travel.

general information

Multifaceted, sunny and bright, delightful, surprising Pattaya, but for some, not so much at all. What can you do, everyone sees everything differently. A city of constant movement, which does not sleep at all, but at the same time it is easy to find peace and tranquility. A city of bright contrasts where everyone will find something to their liking and wallet.

According to the 2015 census, Pattaya has 115,840 registered residents. In fact, including tourists and temporary residents, the actual population is 3-5 times larger, depending on the time of year.

Until now, Pattaya is best known in the world for “adult recreation” - countless beer bars on the streets, go-go bars, the world famous walking street, “unusual” massage and other delights. However, recently the city authorities have begun to restore order in order to transform Pattaya and attract more “decent” tourists - married couples, families with children. Also, large-scale work is being carried out in the city to clean up the beaches and the sea.

Beach Road

But, despite the reputation of a city of debauchery, you can have a wonderful holiday here with your family even now, you just need to know where and how. There are many entertainment options, cultural and historical treasures, beaches and sea excursions at your disposal. In general, Pattaya is still conducive to active pastime. So if that's your thing, you'll love Pattaya. You can say about Pattaya that you either won’t like it at all, or you’ll like it forever.

There is an opinion that it is not very good to relax here with children. We don't agree with this, there are a lot of places in Pattaya where children will really enjoy it. And we have checked this more than once!

Why go to Pattaya?

Various excursions, Thai cuisine and an abundance of seafood, cheap and fresh fruit. Exotic, attractions, temples and museums. Visiting the islands. Atmosphere and nightlife.

In general, there are enough reasons!

Where is Pattaya?

Pattaya is located in the province of Chonburi, on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Thailand in the southeastern part of Thailand. The city is located near the capital of the kingdom - the city of Bangkok, which is about 165 kilometers away.

How to get to Pattaya?

To get to Pattaya, you first need to get to Thailand. The most logical and easiest way is to fly to Bangkok.

Nearest airports

The closest airports to Pattaya are:

  • Suvarnabhumi (Suvarnabhumi) IATA: BKK, ICAO: VTBS. The main international airport in Bangkok. The largest airport in Thailand.
  • Don Mueang (Don Mueang or Don Muang) IATA: DMK, ICAO: VTBD. Bangkok International Airport. Also known as the old airport.
  • Utapao. IATA: UTP – ICAO: VTBU. The closest airport to Pattaya. Sometimes it is called that - Pattaya Airport

As a rule, charter flights from Russia are accepted by Suvarnabhumi and Utapao airports. Regular - only Suvarnabhumi (meaning direct flights). Don Mueang is used by local low-cost airlines, mainly for domestic flights.

The distance from the country's main air port - Suvarnabhumi International Airport (Suvanapum) is about 120 km.

How and where to buy tickets to Pattaya?

You can buy tickets yourself directly from home. Fortunately, modern technologies do not stand still and most people have been buying air tickets this way for a long time. To choose a more profitable option, it is advisable to use special search engines, for example Avisales

It is also convenient to use the low price calendar

How to get there from Bangkok?

After arrival, you need to get to the city by ground transport. If you bought a tour, then you don’t need to worry at all, since you will be taken from the airport to Pattaya by a special bus.

Route from Suvarnabhumi Airport

Well, if you went on your own, then there are several options for you.

Buses run regularly (every half hour) from Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya. The ticket is quite inexpensive - 120 Baht per person. One piece of luggage is included in the price.

In addition to the bus, a taxi is always available, although it will cost much more - from 1,500 Baht for a standard taxi and from 2,700 Baht if you go with the airport’s proprietary AOT Limousine service. On our trips we used both bus and taxi.

There are services through which you can order a taxi from the airport to Pattaya in advance (directly from home or along the way). On the day of arrival, you will be greeted with a sign and taken where you need to go without any hassles. The cost will be approximately 3,000 rubles, it all depends on the class of car.

In addition, there is another option to use the Grab Taxi service application, although the trip will not be much cheaper - approximately 1,200 Baht.

Weather in Pattaya

When planning a trip to Pattaya, especially for the first time, you need to familiarize yourself with the climate and weather so that you know what to expect. In Pattaya, as throughout Thailand, the climate is very unusual for tourists living in other latitudes and conditions. It's hot and humid here.

Rain over Pattaya. Don't worry, this doesn't happen too often

The best time to visit Pattaya is from November to March, as the weather is most favorable and comfortable at this time.

History of Pattaya

The famous resort city of Thailand, Pattaya, also has its own history.

It tells the story of how, in the 50s of the last century, an inconspicuous fishing village was chosen for recreation by soldiers of the US Armed Forces, who were based at the airport nearby. There was a war with Vietnam, and Thailand, as an ally of the United States, was overflowing with its military bases.

Pattaya Beach 1977

The desire to brighten up their monotonous everyday life brought the soldiers to a secluded place where they could sunbathe on clean beaches, swim in the waters of the Gulf of Thailand, and at the same time have fun with local beauties.

Attractions

Like any tourist city, Pattaya has its own attractions. Some of them are the “calling card” of the city; they are very famous and popular all over the world. Whether you visit them or not is, of course, up to you, but some of them, we think, are simply necessary.

Golden Buddha Mountain - Khao Chi Chan

The most famous of them undoubtedly include:

  • - the largest Buddha statue in Pattaya and a significant religious site
  • , which amazes with its scale and collection of plants
  • - a unique building that you will definitely remember for a long time - it is an entirely wooden temple, more than a hundred meters high.
  • Walking street - the center of nightlife and adult entertainment in Pattaya, can also be called a landmark known throughout the world.

Fun for the whole family

In addition to the main and cultural-historical attractions of the city, there are many more places and activities for adults and children in Pattaya.

Giraffes in Kha Kheo

At the Teddy Bear Museum

At your disposal are zoos and game rooms. Pattaya even has an ice skating rink!

  • - a huge super-entertainment center for the whole family, located in the central area
  • - trampoline park in Harbor
  • - a large and cool themed water park from the cartoon channel of the same name
  • - the largest and newest in Thailand
  • - will surprise anyone with its size and diversity of inhabitants.
  • - here you will see a very interesting dolphin show, and you can also take pictures and even swim with them.
  • - cool bear museum

Food, cafes and restaurants

There are many places to eat here. Even a lot! Starting from street makashnitsa (carts that are transported manually or using a bike) to very expensive and chic restaurants.

Right on the streets and in the markets of the city you can try various Thai street food - chicken/seafood skewers, sausages and meat balls, noodle dishes with meat, Thai soups, Pad Thai. And also the favorite pancakes with banana and Nutella, and with other fillings)

Pattaya has cafes and restaurants serving most of the world's national cuisines, as well as purely Thai establishments with authentic cuisine. Global chains of fast food and desserts, inexpensive local street cafes.

Check out our reviews of some of them:

For those who miss Russian cuisine, there is a place where you can enjoy borscht, dumplings and cutlets

Transport

There are no special problems with transport in the city, just some types of it are very unusual. The local population travels by car and, of course, motorbikes (scooter, moped in our opinion). There are, of course, countless numbers of bikes here, as throughout Asia. The Thais manage to ride them with three or even four (with children).

As for public transport, this is where significant differences begin. There are no city shuttle buses, trolleybuses or trams in the city. They move here to, which, if we draw an analogy, replace the minibus. This is inexpensive, even the cheapest transport. Songthaews run along all the main streets of the city and you can easily get to the right place on them. Look

In addition, both car and motorcycle services are always available in Pattaya. Their parking lots are located on all busy streets and at various tourist spots.

You can also rent a bike or a car, but people hardly ride bicycles around the city. Inconvenient and dangerous.

Beaches

It's no secret that Pattaya is not famous for its “paradise” beaches. Unfortunately, most of them are completely different from those shown in pictures in travel agencies and on the Internet.

The most important city beach in the center is, which, by the way, has recently become better. For many, it is this fact of expectation versus reality that causes disappointment and negative emotions. But Pattaya does not claim to be the best place for a beach holiday. In general, we can say that if you only need to lie on the beach and swim in blue water, then perhaps you should take a closer look at other resorts.

On Jomtien Beach in Pattaya

Nevertheless, there are beaches, and on some of them it is quite normal to relax and swim.

The best nearby beaches are not exactly in Pattaya, but they are easy to get to. For example, or on the island of Koh Lan

Koh Larn Island

The nearest one offers tourists its beautiful beaches, which are completely different from those in Pattaya. Clear water of a beautiful color and a real beach holiday - that’s what awaits everyone there. When we visited here for the first time, we were amazed at the huge difference. It’s a very short distance, but it’s as if you’ve arrived in a completely different place.

Beach on Koh Larn island

Due to its proximity to Pattaya, for many Koh Larn is associated as an integral part of a holiday here. On our trips, we always set aside days to visit Koh Larn.

You can get to the island from Bali Hai Pier by ferry (40 min) or speedboat (15-20 min). The island has several main, accessible beaches, which are not difficult to get to. Some of them can be reached directly from the ferry. Almost all beaches have cafes and there are no problems with food. For example, you can eat a portion of noodles with meat for 40 Baht. For 100 Baht you can buy good denim shorts and for the same amount you can buy a good T-shirt. A foot massage costs from 180 Baht. A small bottle of water costs 6 baht, and a can of cola costs 14. But these are all minimum prices, of course, and you won’t be able to spend exactly that much every day.

We have collected prices for basic goods and services that you will primarily need for your vacation in the article:

Markets in Pattaya

For many years, Pattaya markets have attracted tourists with their selection and inexpensive prices. Spending time at the market, among mountains of goods, fruits and ready-made food, is very interesting. Here you can find almost everything you need for relaxation - clothes, shoes, hats, glasses. Bags, backpacks, selfie sticks, chargers.

Of course, there are no expensive technical devices and large equipment here, nor clothes from the world's leading brands - but these are markets, after all. By the way, the clothes are quite good, decent in appearance and of high quality.

At one of the markets in Pattaya

In general, if you want to buy things inexpensively, eat fresh Thai fruits or taste authentic street food, go to the market! The largest and most popular shopping centers are: - a large and very popular shopping and entertainment center located in the very center; (formerly Central Center) is a wonderful shopping complex on 2nd Street.

Where to buy groceries?

There are absolutely no problems with buying groceries in Pattaya. Large chain supermarkets and their mini-formats such as Big C and Tesco Lotus are at your disposal.

Tesco Lotus on North Street

These stores have everything you need and even more. Absolutely all types and types of food products in a large assortment, drinks, ready meals. There is also a large selection of household goods.

It is best to buy fruits at markets - they are fresher and you can bargain.

Seafood is also sold in stores, but if you want the freshest, you need to head to the fish markets. For example,

And Family Mart - these stores deserve a separate story. They sell, in a small area, a huge range of essential goods, from food to medicine. The list of drinks, sunscreens, batteries can go on for a long time... it’s a kind of store of 1000 little things)

These stores are also popular because you can very inexpensively buy various sandwiches and burgers, which they will prepare for you right away. Prepared meals in packages that you can take with you or heat up right in the store. Here you can pour a glass of hot coffee.

On the shelves of 7-eleven

These stores are scattered throughout Pattaya and are within walking distance anytime, anywhere.
