Back in August last year, the fact that Booking.com sends credit card data to the hotel for booking a room by fax was brought up for discussion by the general public and that it is not at all difficult for third parties to obtain this data. In particular, the media highlighted the story of Facebook user Roman Mamonov, who published on his page on the social network a scan of a fax received by his acquaintance from Turkish of The Marions Suite.

The fact is that a friend wanted to check his reservation at the hotel. As a confirmation of the reservation, a fax was sent from the hotel, which, among other things, contained all the card details that the friend entered on Booking.com.

According to Volkov, in cooperation with Booking.com with hotels, the first provided them with complete data on the cards of their customers so that hotels could write off the deposit for room reservations from their accounts. “We can assume that in the“ Booking.com plus hotel ”scheme, voice authorizations of the card were carried out in cases where the physical presence of the card was actually required,” the banker says. - In fact, having all the data on the card, the hotel employee can write off the amount required for payment at any time - both before the client arrives, and during, and even after. Volkov advises everyone who has seen their card details at the hotel via fax from Booking.com to first replace the card at their issuing bank with another, with a different number. “People who have seen printouts of their own card details at the hotel have the right to demand from Booking.com at least a certain amount of moral compensation, because they were not aware that information about them is being transferred in full to third parties,” the expert comments. - As proof, you must demand from the hotel employee to provide you with an official copy of the fax with the sent card data and an explanatory note about who and when he received this data. Without delay, I call the Booking support service and ask them to solve this problem. I'll tell you how it all happened, I was advised to cancel my reservation at the Bristol Hotel, as it was my second reservation. I am trying to explain that I did not make the first reservation, or rather tried to make it, but received a refusal from the system and it would be more logical to cancel what was booked by mistake, without my knowledge.

To this, the operator Dmitry assures me that there were no failures in the system. Then I understand that I was in a stupid situation, and later I find out that the Rialto hotel (which was booked by mistake) has already charged me the entire amount and I call the support service again.

Dmitry informs me that if the money has already been debited, then the chances of getting it back are 0 and recommends blocking the card in order to avoid being debited from the Bristol hotel. Dmitry then asks for time to contact the Bristol Hotel and ask them to make a free cancellation. After a while, I find out that it was possible to cancel, but the cancellation penalty will be 100% and if I do not reset the card, then 35,000 rubles will be charged from me.

Of course, I reset the card and ask that they try to solve my problem in a less radical way, since, logically, I just throw the hotel for money and it is the hotel that I myself booked.

Upon arrival at the Rialto Hotel, we are informed that the rooms of the booked category have run out, but they are ready to upgrade to a premium suite. This once again confirms the fact that the reservation was made by a system error.

Upon arrival in Moscow, attempts are made to write off money from my blank card, an amount of 35,000 rubles, a penalty for canceling a reservation at the Bristol hotel, which I have not been to.

I call Booking again and ask them to solve this problem, because I am waiting for a transfer to the card and which is more than the amount of the fine. In Booking they promise to call me back and disappear. I never heard them again.

I go to Sberbank and reissue the card.

I don't know yet if the Bristol Hotel will continue to pursue me in order to write off the fine. But now I know for sure that Booking is completely unprepared to solve customer problems, especially those that occurred due to a failure in the application.

It is good that the card is debit and without overdraft, otherwise I would not have been able to avoid being debited. So think before tying credit cards. And by tying debit cards, try not to keep large amounts of money on them, as there are failures. And then it will be difficult for you to prove something.
