Portugal waves 30 meters. Portugal, g

To the ears of advanced surfers "Nazare" sounds like a song of paradise: they are ready to offer prayers to this tiny village located an hour's drive from Lisbon. Why - the secret is simple. It is here, in this ancient village, which was founded in 1514, that gigantic waves are recorded, which only the most courageous can comprehend. 30 meters of raging and roaring moisture, which rushes from the depths of the Atlantic to the rugged sea coast of Nazare - this is the element with which only the strongest surfers in the world want to compete. And, I must say, they often succeed. All the others just stand with their mouths open, and quietly whisper to themselves, "and where you are taking you, miserable one."

Otherwise, Nazare is a typical Portuguese village. Extremely cozy, picturesque, with a luxurious long beach framed by mastodon cliffs, ancient sights and charming fish restaurants.

How to get there

Nazare is located in the district of Leiria, about an hour's drive from the capital of Portugal and two hours from the beautiful Porto. It is easy to get here by car along the A8 highway. All "carless" can be recommended to take the express bus, which arrives at the Nazare bus station, which is in the very center of the city. The third option is the train. From Lisbon, they leave several times a day, you need to get off in the town of Valado de Frades, which is located 6 km from the village. Further - by taxi or local buses Rodoviária do Tejo.

In addition, Nazare is often chosen as a snack point during excursion trips along the so-called "Golden Circle" of Portugal (the very one that includes Sintra, Alcobasa, Batalha and other cities). And the reasons for this choice are simple - the place is colorful, and local fish restaurants are rated by guests as "amazing", and the ocean views from them - God forbid.

4 things to do in Nazar

  1. Climb the old funicular to the Cityu.
  2. Visit one of the local fish restaurants.
  3. Watch the wild surfers planking the Atlantic Ocean ( best views- in winter and in the off-season).
  4. Have a romantic evening on the beach with a bottle of port and an invariable Turner-style sunset.

Transport

The Atlantic Ocean licks the "heels" of the city, but the "heart" of Nazare is located quite high - on the steep hill of Citiu, where you can climb on foot, but better (and more interesting) - by funicular. This is the most convenient means of transportation in the city, which was opened already in 1889.Since then, it broke down several times (not without casualties, alas), stood idle for five years, then it was electrified and re-launched to the delight of tourists and locals. The length of the funicular is 318 m, the journey takes about 3 minutes, the fare is about 2.5 EUR.

Prices on the page are for September 2018.

Entertainment and attractions Nazare

As mentioned above, the "heart" of Nazare lies on the Sítio cape, which is easily recognizable from the postcards that are sold throughout Portugal. This is another " business card»Countries of port. In a word, the views that open from here do about the same with your breath as with a black piece of cheese.

A steep cliff with a height of 318 m, in addition to panoramas, the Ermida da Memória chapel is famous, which was built in honor of the created Holy Mother of God miracle - the rescue of the fidalgo horse Don Fouach Roupinho. Believe the legend or not - judge you, but the locals will gladly show on the Miradouro do Suberco observation deck the mark that a horseshoe horse allegedly left on a foggy morning in 1182, almost knocking himself and the king down during a hunt. into the abyss.

In addition, the 17th century sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Nazare and the Museum of Joaquim Manso (Museu Dr. Joaquim Manso) attract attention here. Another important attraction of Nazare, which is located at the far end of the cape, has been around for five centuries - this is the Sau Miguel Arcanjo fort built in 1577. The fortress was built by order of King Sebastian to defend against possible pirate attacks. Later, the fort became famous for the brave band of Portuguese peasants who, with a pitchfork at the ready, drove out the army of the low French emperor during the occupation of Portugal by Napoleon's army.

Finally, if time remains, it is worth looking into the local Ethnographic and Archaeological Museum (the best stand is with the history of the national costume), the Museum of Religious Arts (in the right wing of the main temple of the city) and the fisherman's house-museum (boats, interiors of fishermen's dwellings, tackle and catch ).

Surfing

Nazare gained his worldwide fame thanks to surfing, and, to be more precise, to surfer from Hawaii Harry McNamaru. It was he who set a world record on the waves of Nazare, catching a wave with a height of almost 34 m. As soon as the New York Times published a photo of this act, Nazare woke up famous. Since then, every winter (it is during the winter months that the highest waves rise), patched surfers from all over the world have been drawn here to set their own record of courage and skill.

By the way, the reasons for the appearance of such high waves, which, fortunately, do not reach the coast, are quite simple. Exactly opposite Nazare in the ocean, there is something like a canyon, a long and narrow gorge. And the underwater currents, reaching it, push those very giant waves to the surface.

The best views of the surfers are from Cape Citiu. And even if you are not a big fan of board sailing, be sure to climb the cape to look at this riot of nature and breathe in the most iodized Atlantic air.

  • Where to stay: With an eye on the "excursion" - of course, in numerous hotels and pensions, guest houses and hostels in the capital of Portugal, the many-sided Lisbon - here you can find an option for every taste and budget. Sun worshipers are invited to the resorts of the Lisbon Riviera - they are located just 15-30 minutes drive from the capital, so it is not far from historical monuments and nightclubs. rest in

Did you know that here, in Portugal, not far from us, there is a place where 30-meter waves rise and set Guinness records on them? This place is called Nazare.

The main architectural monument here is considered the small chapel Capela da Memória. It was built in honor of the Virgin Mary, whom the locals consider their patroness. Pilgrims from all over Europe visit the chapel all year round. Opposite the chapel is the Church of Our Lady, built at the end of the 14th century.

You can enjoy the picturesque views from the Citiu cliff. For this, a spacious observation deck... Tourists can reach the cliff on a modernized cable car, which is considered to be the most famous vehicle in Nazar. The height of the cliff is 318 meters, from here an amazing view of the lower part of Nazare opens .

Surfing

The unique Nazare canyon (Portugal) stretches along the coast for 170 km. Waves here can reach heights of 30 meters. Surfers from all over the world come to this small village to take part in the annual world competition. Waves that burst from the depths of the Atlantic Ocean can easily engulf surfers at the slightest mistake. But this does not stop the athletes. In 2013, Garrett McNamara (Hawaiian surfer) set a world record: he conquered a wave of over 30 meters.

How to get there

Nazare (Portugal) is located in the Leiria district. You can get here from Lisbon or Porto by regular bus. A bus ticket costs about 12 euros - this is the most cheap option in order to get to the fishing village. The bus stops at Nazare Station, which is a short walk from the city's main waterfront and from the Atlantic Ocean.

Waves, driven by the wind and breaking near the shore, are among the things that you can look at forever. Especially if they have such a record height that the water can cover you to your full height. There is a special place on our planet where the highest waves can be observed regularly.

Nazare - a fishing village with giant waves

In Portugal, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, there is small village At dawn. This is a real fishing village, founded in the 16th century, with a population of about 10 thousand inhabitants.

The village is colorful, with beautiful sandy beaches(according to some reports, the best in Portugal), with good-natured residents who can still be found in colorful traditional outfits. There is even a fisherman's museum, and in addition, other attractions: the Church of Our Lady, the Citiu quarter with a stunning panorama, a 900-year-old chapel and a lighthouse. But this is not what travelers come here for. The fact is that there are waves of gigantic heights, at which surfers set world records.

Therefore, everyone who loves surfing simply needs to visit here. And also for those who want to look at the raging elements, because nothing is so mesmerizing as the ocean, its strength and power.

Waves to set records

In summer, Nazaré is like a classic resort: heat, sea, beach with many tourists. But the fun does not stop here in winter: real extreme people and lovers of gawking come here, and swimming at this time here is a real murder. It is in winter that the season of surfers begins: waves near the coast reach 25-30 meters in height.

Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara first brought popularity to the town. He came to Nazar to ride a board. It was here that he conquered the world's largest wave on a sandy bottom. Its height was 24 meters. After a couple of years, the surfer returned and broke his own record, this time the wave reached 30 meters. After that, the lighthouse in Nazar was turned into the Garrett McNamara Museum. The main exhibit here is the very same board made by Mercedes Benz, on which the world record was set.

Where do such big waves come from?

In fact, such waves are quite rare (unless, of course, we are talking about tsunamis or rogue waves). However, in reality, everything is explained quite easily. The fact is that the village is located next to the largest underwater gorge in Europe - Nazare Canyon. And this gorge is actually huge: it stretches for about 170 kilometers in length, and the deepest point of the canyon is 5 thousand meters from the surface.

Description of the excursion

Nazare city Is one of the many Portuguese cities where special miracles have taken place over a long, eventful history. Officially, the city received this name only at the beginning of the 20th century. He combined several settlements, including "the place of Nazare", in Portuguese Sitio da Nazare. This is the upper part of the city, where important historical monuments are located. One of them is the Temple of Our Lady of Nazareth, where the sacred image of Our Lady of Nazareth is kept, otherwise it is called the Black Madonna. It is in her honor that the city is named.

Church "Nossa Senhora da Nazare". In the left wing there is a hospital, and in the right wing there used to be royal chambers ...

The image is carved out of wood, measuring only 25 cm, and represents the Mother of God sitting on a skylight with Jesus in her arms. The original was cut by Joseph himself when Jesus was a baby. The first Christians of Nazareth worshiped him, an image made of wood. Over time, it was multiplied and spread throughout the world.

Perhaps the church in Nazar left the most pleasant memories of all the others in Portugal ... here you can look into the holy of holies

So, in the 5th century, one of the images was brought from Nazareth by a Greek monk to the Spanish city of Merida. Merida in those days was the religious capital of the entire Iberian Peninsula. For two centuries, the monks of one of the monasteries of Merida prayed to this sacred image.

Madonna of Nazareth behind glass ... at arm's length

At the beginning of the 8th century, the Moors appeared on the Iberian Peninsula. With a new religion. They quickly conquered city after city. The Muslim faith was forcibly implanted. Those who voluntarily converted to a new religion were given life. Those who disagree were threatened with death. In the battle for Merida, the Moors were victorious. The leader of the Christians, King Rodrigo, managed to escape from the battlefield, he took refuge in the very monastery where the image of the Mother of God was located. Fleeing from the inevitable reprisal, with one of the monks, he went to the Atlantic coast, taking the image with him. Having covered more than 300 km, the king and monk decided to become hermits and settled in different places. Don Rodrigo - in an abandoned church on Mount de São Bartolomeu. And the monk lived until the end of his days in a cave, just at the cliff where Sitio da Nazare is located, keeping with him the sacred image of Our Lady of Nazareth.

Upper part of the city "Sitio da Nazare". This is where the history of modern Nazare began ...

It is unlikely that at that time this place, Sitio da Nazare, was inhabited. Who could settle in the seven winds without an order from above? Near the sand dunes ... in any case, I did not find information. The continuation of the story takes us to 1182. By then, during the Reconsists, the territory that is now Portugal was liberated from Muslim rule. With the help of the knights of the religious orders. As a token of gratitude, King Afonso the Great, or the Founder, awarded them with lands. Here and there fortresses, castles, abbeys arose. But now about something else. In the early morning of September 14, 1182, Don Fouache Roupino, the commander of one of the fortresses, the Templar, was on a hunt with his comrades. Fog. Don Fouache, on horseback, is chasing a deer. The deer jumps out of fear into the abyss, off the cliff.

This is how it was ...

Another moment, and the horse, along with the rider, will follow there. And then Don Roupino cries out for help to the Virgin Mary. An unknown force stops the horse at the very edge ... How to express gratitude to the savior? Don Fouache decides to build a chapel. For the construction I had to look for material. So, the masons ended up in the same cave. And they found an ivory box. And in it is a sacred image and parchment, where the story of how the image of the Virgin Mary ended up here was recorded. When the chapel was built, the image was placed inside for worship. The news of the miracle attracted pilgrims from everywhere. Commoners and kings prayed in this tiny chapel. Over time, the pilgrims did not have enough space. Therefore, in the XIV century, a church was built near the chapel. Madonna settled there. And Sitio began to grow under the tutelage of the kings themselves. The church was completed, decorated with gold and Azuleja tiles, made by special order in Holland. Now the image of Our Lady of Nazareth can be viewed at arm's length. For 2 euros

This is the very Chapel that Roupino built. Where until the XIV century there was a sacred image. Going down 6 steps, the pilgrims prayed to the Virgin Mary

Believe it or not in these stories? Let's believe! It's more interesting ... Here's another unconfirmed one. In 1609, Father Bartalameo, a chronicler, a monk of the monastery in Alkubas, discovered ancient parchments in the archives of the monastery, which described the events and details of the events concerning the cave and the rescue of the Templar. This news was presented to the public. Only where the parchments are now, it seems, no one knows. And modern science has not confirmed the authenticity of the image itself. But who needs it and why? The main thing is that people believe in miracles! The legend helped the whole city grow! And for us - the opportunity to have fun, to think, to dream about our own miracle ... The Mother of God appeared in Portugal more than once ... She is considered the patroness of the country, and from time to time helps her subjects ... Brave Portuguese sailors also believed in her miraculous power. They asked her blessing and help before their long and dangerous travels right here, in Nazar. Vasco de Gama, Pedro Cabral, the great Jesuit Francis Xavier and many others.

This is a view of the new Nazare. Once upon a time there was an ocean on the site of these houses ... and a little warmer ...
