On Red Square, grateful fellow countrymen erected a monument to him. Ivan the Terrible was going to move the capital of Russia from Moscow to Vologda and considered Pereslavl as the main strategic point. It stood near the road that leads to Vologda, Nikitsky Monastery, erected in 1561-1564, was rebuilt into an impregnable high fortress.

At the beginning of the 17th century Pereslavl-Zalessky captured by the Polish-Lithuanian invaders, who were expelled from the city in 1609 by the troops of Skopin-Shuisky. At the same time, together with the militia of Pozharsky and Minin, the inhabitants of Pereslavl took an active part in the liberation of the capital of Russia - Moscow. The end of the century was marked by an unprecedented revival for Pereslavl.

In 1688, Peter I began to build on Lake Plesheevoe "a funny flotilla", which laid the foundation for the great Russian fleet. From all over Russia, lumberjacks, blacksmiths, carpenters, carvers began to come here, who had a huge impact on the development of culture and crafts in the city.

With great Pereslavl-Zalessky the names of many famous church saints and figures are associated, including Dmitry Prilutsky, Sergius of Radonezh, Metropolitans Peter, Athanasius, Pimen and others.

Pereslavl is closely intertwined with the fate of the wife of the great Russian prince Dmitry Donskoy Evdokia, who escaped with the baby in Pereslavl - Zalessky from the persecution of Khan Tokhtamysh.

A little later, with her donations, the Goritsky monastery burned by the Mongol-Tatars was restored and a new beautiful wooden monastery was erected on the banks of the Trubezh, which was named John the Theologian. Ivan the Terrible and Vasily III visited Pereslavl-Zalessky to pray to God.

They made rich contributions to the Goritsky, Troitsky Danilov and Nikitsky monasteries. During the reign of Ivan the Terrible Aleksandrov, the Pereslavl district settlement became the main center of the oprichnina, in which the famous Pereslavl residents Aleksey, Fyodor Basmanov and Malyuta Skuratov played a prominent role. There are four monasteries operating to this day. Their ensembles were formed in the XIV-XVII centuries.

From the ancient city, the construction of which was completed by the son of Yuri Dolgoruky, the Russian prince Andrei Bogolyubsky, only the Transfiguration Cathedral, erected in 1157, and earthen ramparts have survived.

This oldest building in North-Eastern Russia is one of the earliest examples of Vladimir-Suzdal architecture. Outwardly, the temple looks simple and modest, but at the same time it is the personification of strength and power.

Unfortunately, its interior decoration has been lost. However, some fragments of the painting, church utensils, are in the largest Moscow historical ones. The son and grandson of Alexander Nevsky were buried in the cathedral.

The people of Pereslavl remember and honor the history of the formation of the "amusing flotilla". One of the surviving Petrovsky bots - "Fortuna" - is kept in the "Botik" museum. This museum-estate is located three kilometers south of the city on the shores of Lake Pleshcheevo. Pereslavl-Zalessky Museums have a huge number of historical exhibits.

Today Pereslavl-Zalessky - a fairy tale... This clean historic city is part of the famous historic route Golden ring Russia. Despite the fact that many city monasteries and churches were lost during the Soviet years, Pereslavl is still considered one of the centers of Russian Orthodoxy.

At present, it is the regional center of the Yaroslavl region, with a population of about 42 thousand inhabitants; cozy, attractive for tourists and clean Russian historical corner with picturesque landscapes, ancient Orthodox shrines, old houses and buildings along the central streets.

A rich history, monuments of ancient Russian architecture, stately domes of churches - it is for this that the provincial Pereslavl-Zalessky joined the list of cities in the Golden Ring of Russia. Alexander Nevsky was born here, Peter I built his amusing flotilla, the Russian fleet was born on the shores of his Pleshcheyevo Lake, the bell towers of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery called residents for Sunday services even before the Mongol-Tatar invasion, and their chimes still spread over the city and its environs ... Located on a picturesque hill, Pereslavl-Zalessky "took over the glory" of the larger ancient Russian cities, comfortably located "behind the forest" and the lake. Real Russian winter and bright sunny summer - coming here at any time of the year you will immerse yourself in the world of ancient peasant Russia.

People have long settled on the shores of the rich Pleshcheyevo Lake, the first Slavic city of Kleshchin was built along the coast, but later Yuri Dolgoruky moved the settlement to the mouth of the Trubezh River, founding the city of Pereslavl - it was immediately surrounded by an earthen rampart, the remains of which can be seen today. It cannot be said that the history of Pereslavl was calm - it suffered from the invasion of the Mongol-Tatars, Polish-Lithuanian troops, internecine strife, was ravaged by the troops of False Dmitry, but this did not prevent it from reaching our days as one of the samples of ancient Russian architecture with a miraculous preserved "pearl "- Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Savior of the XII century. As soon as the city fell under the control of Moscow, it began to actively develop as a trade and craft center, unwanted people were exiled here, and local forests attracted even Moscow princes with their hunting grounds. Modern Pereslavl-Zalessky is not only cultural and tourist centre, but also a favorite place for pilgrims - six monasteries with unique churches and temples beckon with solitude and silence for all who want to join God.

A walk around Pereslavl-Zalessky is rich in impressions - you will be surprised by the number of unusual museums and exhibitions, which is only the Iron Museum, the Steam Locomotive Museum or the Peter's Boat Museum. Get to know ancient architecture residential buildings can be found in the Temerins 'estate or the Pavlovs' House, and the final page of this journey will be a hospitable tea party in one of the cafes overlooking the quiet waters of Pleshcheyevo Lake.

Transfiguration Cathedral

The same age as the city, the Transfiguration Cathedral was founded together with Pereslavl-Zalessky himself on a picturesque place surrounded by city ramparts. The XII century was a time of internecine wars, therefore the architecture of the cathedral is strict and ascetic. The white stone walls of the cross-domed temple emphasize the laconic beauty, because even after going through many centuries of trials, several fires and countless wars, the temple has been preserved almost in its original form.

Many Pereslavl appanage princes are buried in the cathedral, it kept in itself many cultural and artistic values, alas, plundered by the Tatar-Mongols and Polish knights. It was possible to save only the divine cup, personally donated to the cathedral by Yuri Dolgoruky. Nowadays, there is a branch of the museum-reserve, which can be accessed by pre-registering for a group excursion.

Goritsky Assumption Monastery

First architectural ensemble, which catches the eye on the way to Pereslavl-Zalessky from Moscow - Goritsky Assumption Monastery. The monastery was built on a hill during the time of Ivan Kalita, and long time remained one of the main Orthodox shrines of this region. Initially, the monastery churches were wooden, but the fires did not spare these buildings, the strongest plundering brought the Mongol-Tatar invasion, but thanks to the generous donations of the Moscow princes, the monastery was quickly restored.

The main cathedral of the monastery - the Assumption - appeared in the second half of the 18th century; besides it, the ensemble consisted of the Holy Gates, the refectory, the Church of All Saints and many other outbuildings. After the October Revolution of 1917, the monastery was abolished, but it was saved from desolation by the initiative to create a historical and architectural museum-reserve on the basis of the monastery. You can still look at its exposition today.

Museum "Boat of Peter I"

The first Russian emperor Peter I left his mark on the history of Pereslavl-Zalessky. It was on the shores of Lake Plescheevo that he erected a shipyard, where the foundations of the Russian fleet were born. The amusing flotilla furrowed the expanses of the lake, laying the foundation for shipbuilding in our country, and the decision to immortalize this event came in 1803. Especially for the last surviving ship "Fortuna", the Botny House was built, claiming to be the oldest provincial museum in the country.

The architectural concept did not end there; later, the Monument to Peter, the Arc de Triomphe and the belvedere were erected, which have survived to this day. This museum has been visited more than once by prominent figures from Russia and foreign countries, and in 1919 it became part of the Pereslavl Museum of History and Local Lore.

Chapel "Cross"

Approaching Pereslavl-Zalessky, you will see a beautiful white-stone chapel resembling a tent. It was built in honor of the birth of the last king of the Rurik dynasty, the son of Ivan the Terrible Fyodor. According to legend, the king himself was very fond of the surrounding forests, and often came here to hunt and pray in local monasteries. His wife also traveled with him. On one of her trips, Tsarina Anastasia Romanovna gave birth to the heir to the throne in the suburbs of Pereslavl, in memory of this Ivan the Terrible ordered to establish a chapel.

In the Time of Troubles, many of the city's monuments were burnt, and the chapel did not survive either - it was erected again, but stone later - in the 17th century, and carefully restored in the 20th century. The building got its name because of the Orthodox cross that once stood on this place, but today it represents an unusual architectural monument- a tent built on stone columns.

The unusual collection of the Iron Museum is more than 200 copies of this household item from different eras and countries. They collected the exposition bit by bit - bought it from collectors, looked for it at flea markets, and brought it from different countries. The earthen rampart is fairly well preserved. From it you can understand what size it was ancient city Tick. Aleksandrova Mountain evokes a special delight! It offers a magnificent panorama of Lake Pleshcheyevo and the surrounding churches of Pereslavl-Zalessky and monasteries. Since ancient times (and it has been known about it for more than 1000 years) the glory of the miraculous has been entrenched for the blue stone. It is said to heal and fulfill wishes. To believe or not to believe is everyone's business. Only for centuries did people go to the stone, some with gratitude, some with a request. And until now, in any weather, people go to the stone, throw coins on it for luck, make wishes. And modern pagans feed him and perform their rituals. According to legend, the blue-stone is alive, and from year to year it changes its place of position. And he is also "not killed". No matter how hard the people of Pereslavl tried to get rid of him - to bury him or drown him, he still returns to the foot of the Alexandrov Mountain.

Pereslavl-Zalessky has an unusually interesting, eventful history. Its picturesque corners preserve the memory of many political figures and important historical facts... The famous military leader Alexander Nevsky was born here in 1220. Here in 1688 the birth of the Russian fleet took place. On the shore of Lake Pleshcheevo, the young Tsar Peter the First began to build his first amusing flotilla. A reminder of this event is the Museum “The Boat of Peter I”, where the main exhibit of the museum is the boat “Fortuna”, in the construction of which Peter himself took part. This is the only ship from the entire flotilla that survived a fire in 1783.

The largest provincial historical-architectural and art museum-reserve in Russia, located in the former Goritsky monastery, has become a popular attraction of Pereslavl. Most tourists who come to the city tend to visit Orthodox monasteries and holy springs. Holy Trinity Danilov, Feodorovsky, Goritsky Assumption, Nikitsky monasteries have been counting for hundreds of years. The main pearl of Pereslavl is the Transfiguration Cathedral. This oldest monument antiquity - the same age as the city itself. Well-equipped hotels and restaurants with original cuisine are welcome to visit this ancient city and see its sights.

For hundreds of years, the ancient city of Pereslavl-Zalessky has stood on the shores of Lake Pleshcheevo. One of the eight main cities of the Golden Ring of Russia, Pereslavl-Zalessky inscribed its name in golden letters in the history of Russia, still preserving its special spirit of the old Russian city, the streets and squares of which are decorated with churches, cathedrals and monasteries.

The very name of the city, Pereslavl, comes from the Old Russian "took over the glory" - in the chronicle of the history of the city there are many worthy of respect pages. Founded by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1152, the city on the shores of Lake Pleshcheevo quickly became one of the most prosperous settlements in the central part of Russia, turning in 1179 into the center of the Pereslavl principality. From here, Prince Vsevolod the Big Nest ruled, who received such a speaking nickname due to the large number of children - eight sons and four daughters. Other significant names for Russia are also associated with the name of Pereslavl-Zalessky: Alexander Nevsky was born here, later Ivan the Terrible made the city a stronghold of the oprichnina, and in 1688, a funny flotilla was laid by the young Tsarevich Peter at Lake Plescheevo, which gave rise to the future great Russian fleet. The ships that plowed the waters of Lake Pleshcheyevo in 1783, unfortunately, almost all burned down during a big fire. Only the boat "Fortuna" survived, which today has become the main exhibit of the Pereslavl Museum-Reserve.

Since the 12th century, since the founding of Pereslavl-Zalessky, the city has been dominated by the unique for our time, the Transfiguration Cathedral, the oldest such structure in the central part of Russia today. The walls of the old Nikitsky Monastery, also built in the 12th century on the shores of Lake Pleshcheevo, have seen many enemies and have withstood more than one siege. The decoration of the monastery since 1564 is the Nikitsky temple - the largest such structure of the 16th century.

In Pereslavl-Zalessky, history is at every step, as evidenced by its numerous churches and monasteries, museums and memorable places, and even the pagan Blue Stone in the vicinity of the city, which is said to have miraculous powers.
