True, recently a number of low-cost airlines have been closely watching Rijeka airport, so it is possible that the airport will "come to life" and become one of the most frequently visited. Buses run from the airport to different settlements of the city, there is a taxi service and a car rental office. For the cost of a taxi, be guided by 1 dollar for each kilometer of the way, but by bus you can cover the same distance 2-4 times cheaper (depending on the end point of the trip). It is assumed that Caesar's military camp was located here and that it was near these shores in 49 BC that a historic naval battle took place, in which Pompey defeated Caesar. Later, Krk came under the rule of the Venetians, who in 1118 handed over the administration of the island to the Dukes of Krk, later known as the Frankopans.

It was one of the most powerful feudal families in the region. Krk remained a Venetian possession until 1480, after which it shared the historical fate of other Adriatic cities. A gradual economic downturn that lasted for several centuries, in the 20th century, was replaced by rapid growth associated with the development of the tourism industry. In addition, the construction of a bridge linking Krk with the mainland of the country has allowed many local residents to find work in and elsewhere without leaving the island.

Thanks to this, Krk, in contrast to many other rural areas of Croatia, has a fairly high population. Despite being close to big city, Krk has retained some of the unique traits inherent in it alone. The most popular local delicacy is the long, thin pasta (Surlice), which is usually eaten with goulash (sa gulasom) or roast lamb (sa zgvacetom). The Vrbnicka Zlahtina wine, which is produced in the town of Vrbnik on the east coast of the island, is also widely known.

Frankopans on the island of Krk

The history of the Frankopans on Krk begins with the grim figure of the ruler Duimo I, who was granted power over the island by the Venetians in the 12th century. Subsequent representatives of the dynasty turned the island into a hereditary feudal possession (drzavina), which was only nominally under Venetian control. After becoming dukes of Krk, the descendants of Duimo used the island as a base to expand their holdings on the mainland.

In 1225, they captured a strip of coastline from Bakar to, after which they expanded their lands inland and created strongholds in Ogulin and Ozala. Thus, the territory belonging to the influential family formed an arc. The name "Frankopans" was officially adopted in 1430, when, at the request of Duke Nicholas, the Pope approved the rights of the family to descend from the family of the ancient Roman patricians, the Frangueopans. This "confirmation" of noble origin was supposed to increase the prestige of the dynasty and make it competitive among other crowned families of Europe.

However, despite this, the influence of the Frankopans on the island was declining, and the defeat of Duke Ivan VII by the Hungarians gave the Venetians a reason to take back the lands once given to Duimo I. On the mainland, representatives of various branches of the clan retained power until the 17th century. The history of the House of Frankopan was finally cut short in 1671, when Fran Krsto Frankopan and his son-in-law Petar Zrinski were executed for leading the anti-Habsburg rebellion.
