In order to protect this rare species, there are certain restrictions, thanks to which it was possible to preserve the pristine beauty of the southern coast of Zakynthos, such as, for example, the ban on being on the beaches after sunset or using your own umbrellas.
You also need to be prepared for the fact that electric lighting is turned off on the entire coast at night and on a moonless night it can be quite difficult to find a way to your car or hotel.
Navajo beach
Anyone who is even slightly interested in the island of Zakynthos as a possible place for a summer vacation is certainly already familiar with the Shipwreck Bay in absentia.

Kalamaki
Covered with fine golden sand, stretching in both directions for sight, this expansive beach is one of the most popular in Zakynthos due to its proximity to the city and crystal-clear calm waters.

Despite the centuries-old domination of the Venetian Catholics over the island, the inhabitants of Zakynthos did not betray Byzantine Orthodoxy, sacredly keeping faith with its traditions, and carefully observing all the rites and rituals.
Churches, temples and monasteries, repeatedly destroyed either by the elements or by the conquerors, were scrupulously restored to the smallest detail in order to once again bring the light of Christianity to the inhabitants of the island.
Church of St. Dionysius
Built shortly before the 1953 earthquake, this largest cathedral in Zakynthos became one of the three buildings on the island that not only survived that terrible natural disaster, but also received absolutely no damage.
Today it is the main Cathedral Zakynthos, thanks to the high 40-meter bell tower on the embankment, has become a kind of landmark and business card the main city of the island.

Built in the 15th century. the monastery has a shady courtyard with a garden full of flowers, inviting tranquility and solitude. Inside the monastery church there is an old icon of the Mother of God, taken from Constantinople, captured by the Turks.
Monastery of St. George "Gremnonsky"
In the famous for its wild natural beauty, the Gremnon area is lost among the rocks of the monastery of St. George, which was founded in 1535 as a refuge for Orthodox hermits.
A little later, to protect the monastery from pirate raids, an imposing tower was erected, which has now become a favorite object of photographing visitors.
The monastery once housed a rich library of Orthodox manuscripts.
Moving from the monastery in the direction of Ano Volimes and turning steeply to the left at the sign, you can find observation deck to admire the magnificent views of the sea and Navayo Bay from above.

This is a building, built during the Venetian times, which is part of the Solomou Square ensemble in the center of Zakynthos, which not only survived the 1953 earthquake, but also the fire that followed.
The significance of this temple for the island, in addition to the miraculous salvation from the elements, also lies in the fact that the patron saint of Zakynthos Dionysius served here as a parish priest.
Museums. Which are worth visiting
The island of Zakynthos has a rich, centuries-old history, reflected in its museums, some of which I will describe below.
Museum of Byzantine Art
At the entrance to the Byzantine Museum, a model of the city of Zakynthos before the terrible earthquake of 1953, made on the basis of old photographs, immediately catches the eye, which makes it possible to imagine what the capital of the island was once.
Among the exhibits of the museum there are also many photographs showing the view of historical buildings before and after the earthquake.
The main exposition presents Byzantine icons, magnificent wooden sculptures, marble decorations of temples, church utensils for liturgies, candlesticks, reliquaries, frescoes and iconostases of the 15th-17th centuries.
Among the most significant exhibits are also paintings by artists who created the local school of painting, covering the time frame from the post-Byzantine period to the present day.
Also here you can see real Orthodox shrines, secretly taken out during the Turkish rule from the occupied territories to the local churches of free Zakynthos, and when they were destroyed by an earthquake they found a place in the museum's exposition.
Maritime Museum "Milanio"
A visit to the museum, founded by the famous Greek marine painter, a native of Zakynthos, Adonis Milanos, is able to impress everyone, even a little familiar with the history of Hellas, because its collection consists of genuine historical relics, kindly offered by the descendants of such legendary personalities as Laskarina Boubulina. Miltiadis Yatridis and others.
The museum's exposition is divided into five thematic sections according to historical eras: antiquity, the Byzantine Empire, the Revolution of 1821, ΧΙΧ and ΧΧ centuries: many unique photographs, ship models, naval uniforms, daggers, medals, compasses and much more. The bedroom, living room, kitchen, dining room of a traditional village dwelling are shown with all the utilitarian objects and tools for housekeeping, cooking and other daily tasks both inside and outside the house. Marine park-reserve
The largest sea bay of Laganas, located in the southern part of Zakynthos, is qualified as a specially protected area due to its unique ecological value. Its foundation was caused by the most urgent need, since rare species of wild animals in this part of the Ionian Sea were under threat of extinction.
Today, the southern coast of Zakynthos, which serves as a favorite breeding ground for the rare loggerhead turtles Caretta Caretta or Loggerhead, and the west coast, home to the endangered Mediterranean white-bellied sea seals of the Monachus Monachus species, are of particular concern.
The marine park includes the coast, waters and islands of the Laganas Bay, as well as the Strophades archipelago located 20 miles south of Zakynthos. These areas are characterized by different types of ecosystems of both national and European importance, including, inter alia, dune and coastal areas and grassy meadows on the marshy shores of Lake Keri, where hundreds of species of flora and fauna are found.
The entire water area of Laganas Bay is divided into zones designated by buoys:
Specially protected, where any passage of ships and fishing is prohibited.

Askos Stone Park
Here you can see in their natural habitat, complemented by artificial decorations of stone buildings, which could exist here in the Neolithic era, hundreds of freely living in natural conditions animals: mammals, birds, amphibians, insects, as well as many species of native plants, shrubs and trees.
The park is open all year round, except for very rainy or cold winter days. There is no time limit for visiting the park during opening hours. Photography and filming are allowed. Tours are conducted by qualified guides, or you can take a printed booklet and explore the area on your own.
Guests of the park can also follow and even under the guidance of a mentor take part in any activities on its territory, for example, collecting olives, milking goats, etc.

The Askos Stone Park is located one kilometer from the port of Agios Nikolaos located on the northern coast of Zakynthos and five from the traditional settlement of Volimes. The Blue Caves are 3 km from here, and the Bay of Navayo is 8. The capital of the island is 30 km away from the park.
Nearby islands
The closest island to Zakynthos from the Ionian archipelago is the cosmopolitan and magnificent Kefalonia, which certainly deserves a separate big story. Here I will tell you about two miniature islets in Laganas Bay, which are extremely popular with tourists.
Marathonisi
A small island in Laganas Bay near the Keri Peninsula, which looks like a turtle, which is why it bears the second name Turtle. You can get here by boat from the villages of Laganas, Keri and Agios Sostis.
As one of the nesting sites for the Caretta-Caretta turtles, it is protected by the National Marine Park, so the stay on the island is limited to daytime only.
There are two beaches, pebbly and sandy, as well as several sea grottoes that are worth exploring. There are no shops here, but a boat approaches the beaches with a small dining room serving snacks and drinks.
Peluso
Located on the other side of Laganas Bay, about 2 miles from Daphne Beach. Apart from one destroyed building on the very shore, there are no other traces of human presence.
The island is a specially protected area, where it is forbidden to stay after sunset, as well as sailing with a motor - only on oars. Having rented a boat, I advise you to immerse a supply of drinking water and food in it.
There is a beach with fine white sand and a rather large cave on the opposite side of the island.

Zakynthos is one of the most fertile places in Greece, producing a wide range of local products. The local food is based on extremely healthy, hearty and, most importantly, extraordinarily tasty Mediterranean cuisine.
As in all the Ionian Islands, fans of Italian cuisine, which has had a significant impact on local culinary traditions, will be able to indulge their gastronomic passions in Zakynthos.
It will not be difficult to find a restaurant serving English, French, and other cuisines of the world, dishes.
Budget establishments
In most cities and villages of Hellas, you can see establishments called "psitopolio", where meat is spun on a spit for the Greek analogue of shawarma, the so-called "Giro". Despite the fact that the set of souvenirs recommended below is quite traditional for any Greek island, it will in no way disappoint you with its routine. After all, here even two seemingly identical products from neighboring regions can radically differ from each other, having an unsurpassed local flavor.
Olive oil
Transportation of olive oil in luggage is associated with certain difficulties both in its packaging and when going through customs, so I rarely advise you to transport it to Russia from Greece.
But the oil of Zakynthos, grown on home olive plantations and pressed almost by hand in family oil mills, has a special, incomparable taste of the sun and the warmth of human hands. And the harvest begins in November and by the spring the fresh oil goes on sale.
Wine
Most of the local wines are produced at home by the inhabitants of the island, but there are also companies such as Inolpi (Οινολπη) or Art & Wine, bottling it on an industrial scale.
The grape harvest begins in August, and in September the fresh wine goes on sale.
Cheese
The local cheese made from goat and sheep milk, canned in olive oil, has a characteristic salty taste and belongs to the category of hard varieties.
Honey
Many inhabitants of Zakynthos have their own beehives and produce unusually tasty mountain honey.
Sweets
In addition to the many traditional oriental sweets found in every confectionery on the island, you can also buy typical island types of nougat, pastilles and others, such as Mandolato, Fitura, Pastels, products most often produced during local festivals.
Ceramics
There are many pottery workshops in Zakynthos where exquisite products are made by hand. The technology of their manufacture and the method of traditional painting have existed here since Byzantine times, and manual production makes each product unique.
In some places, the masters allow not only to observe the process of their work, but also to participate in it.
Shopping and shops
On the small island, whose life is devoted to tourism in summer and agriculture in winter, you will not find large hypermarkets or super-fashionable boutiques. Its inhabitants provide themselves with a full range of products themselves, and even supply them to neighboring regions.
Most of the souvenir shops both on the coast and in the mountain villages offer products, 90% of which are dedicated to the famous sea turtles. But among the remaining 10%, you can find rather elegant and unique things. It can be ceramics, traditional embroidery or something similar, who is lucky in what.
I recommend that everyone be sure to visit jewelry stores on the islands, from where, I am sure, you will not leave without a gift for yourself or your loved ones. Moreover, these may not necessarily be gold products. Greek jewelers know how to make and make amazing silver gizmos, jewelry from amber, gems and other, sometimes completely unconventional materials.
By the way, I must say that the art of Greek furriers is also known far beyond the borders of Hellas. They make very high quality products from genuine leather and fur. Leather shoes bought in an inconspicuous semi-basement store may well be of the same quality as Italian ones.
Zakynthos - holidays with children
The most grateful guests of Zakynthos are usually children, for whom there is a truly heavenly place here: gentle sea, hot sun, dense vegetation, stunning excursions to Navayo Bay and the Blue Caves, visiting interesting museums, such as "Milanio" or "Helmi", acquaintance with rare species of marine animals in the Sea national park and land - in the Park of stones. And, most importantly, there is a real abundance of the freshest fruits, vegetables and simply delicious food.

Every traveler who has ever visited Zakynthos has his own idea of which part of the island to prefer for living. Those who want to spend time on the beach, fully surrendering to the sun and the sea, will most likely choose the southern part of the island - the areas of Laganas and Kalamaki. Adherents of an active lifestyle and practicing mountain and sea sports will probably choose to live in the central or northern part of Zakynthos: the villages of Mikro-Nisi, Alykes, etc.
Personally, I do not particularly like to live on the Greek islands in the area of the port and city center, preferring quiet villages on the coast, where there are not so many tourists, affordable prices and a patriarchal way of life.
Argasi
A five-minute drive from the capital of the island towards the beautiful Vasilikos peninsula is the tourist resort of Argasi, where you can spend the whole day on an amazing sandy beach with crystal clear waters, ideal for families with children.
The southern part of the beach attracts everyone's attention the remains of the old Venetian bridge, who knows how they got here.
Also in the vicinity of Argasi there is an amazing Church of Panagia Skopiotissa, built in 1624, standing in the ruins of an old destroyed monastery. And in antiquity, this place was the temple of Artemis.
On the central road of the village there are many shops, supermarkets, clubs, bars, restaurants, taverns and cafes and in general everything that you may need on vacation, as well as taste dishes of Greek, Italian and international cuisines of the world.
Despite the outward patriarchy and tranquility, in the Argasi area there are some of the best nightlife bars for young people in Zakynthos and popular clubs with Greek music.

Due to the favorable location near the main city of Zakynthos, the proximity to the sea and the beaches of the Vasilikos peninsula, peace and quiet, but at the same time, places with a stormy nightlife make this resort the perfect place to stay and explore the island.

Volimes
This, in fact, consisting of two parts: the Upper and the Lower, a picturesque settlement can, without exaggeration, be called the capital mountain villages Zakynthos. It is located in a natural environment of stunning beauty of the landscape and rich vegetation. The road here lies between pine forests, olive groves, vineyards and fields of cereals and vegetables, and from above the view now and then snatches out a lacy rocky coast, cut by many crevices, where tiny beaches and endless turquoise sea are hidden to the very horizon.
In the Upper Village - Ano Volimes, you can admire the traditional architecture of the mountain villages of Greece with invariably narrow streets and an old stone church with a bell tower.
From the Lower Kato Volimes village you can easily go down to the coastline with the beaches of Xigio, Makris Yialos, and Agios Nikolaos.
There is also the amazing Askos Rock Park, described in more detail in the corresponding section, the church of Agia Paraskevi with stunning frescoes, and boats leave from the beaches of Makris Yialos and Agios Nikolaos to Navayo Bay and the Blue Caves.
And the best way to end your trip to Volimes, I think, is to have a good dinner in one of the small and cozy local taverns. The food and wine here is exclusively made from the freshest, organic, locally sourced produce and believe me, it will be another fond memory of this trip.
Keri
The village of Keri on the peninsula of the same name, located 19 km from the capital of Zakynthos, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, has rich history and carefully preserved traditions. As they say, at one time the ancient Greek historian Herodotus lived here.
The clean sandy beach overlooking the island of Marathonisi is the best choice for an unforgettable family vacation with children and romantic couples in love.
There are many taverns in the waterfront area, where there is always the opportunity to learn more about traditional Greek and Mediterranean cuisine.
Here, in a small port on the coast, you can rent a boat to get to the island of Marathonisi or go on an excursion to the nearby caves at Cape Keri.
Also, vacationers offer their services for an organized and safe diving in the nearest points of the coast diving club.
Features of the mentality
For thousands of years, Zakynthos has been at the historical crossroads of all parts of the world, endless movements of peoples and interpenetration of cultures. The most significant influence on him in the Middle Ages was, of course, more than three centuries of being under the rule of Venice, from which the islanders never gave up their attempts to free themselves. Here, for example, in 1628, one of the first revolutionary uprisings in Europe broke out, drowned in blood by the Venetians, but remained forever in the memory of the people.
Love for freedom, patriotism, respect for folk traditions, devotion to Orthodox Christianity - these features, characteristic of any Greek, are expressed in the inhabitants of Zakynthos, no less. And some ostentatious cosmopolitanism, Italian words in the local dialect, a little more openness and bravado, sharpness and irony make up the colorful shades of the local folk character, which can be anything, but never boring.

I am sure that everyone who is planning a trip to Zakynthos has included in her program a trip to Navayo Bay, and boat trip to the Blue Caves, and an ascent to the Venetian fortress on the Bohali hill, and acquaintance with the famous sea turtles Caretta-Caretta on the Geraka beach. To select other points of your trip, I think the recommendations in this article of mine are enough. But even its decent volumes were not enough to describe everything more or less worthy of acquaintance on this wonderful island.
- Taste a stewed country rooster in a red wine sauce with homemade noodles ("kokkora krasato me macarunes")
- Visit the famous ΜΑΝΤΟΛΑΤΟ confectionery in the capital of the island, next to the Aegli Hotel, at 12 Lomvardu, to taste the traditional local sweets produced here.
- Commit horse ride horseback riding in the picturesque surroundings of the village of Planos, which is located above the Tsilivi beach. Inexperienced riders can take riding lessons here, and there are laid back Scottish ponies for the kids.
- Those who are lucky enough to have a rest in Zakynthos in July should visit the concerts of the annual jazz festival, where musicians gather not only from Greece, but also from Germany, France, and other countries.
- Sit in the Votsalo tavern in the town of Marafias west coast Laganas Bay, enjoying a combination of stunning sea views and the unmistakable aroma of Greek cuisine. Taxi. What features are there
In Greece, there is a single tariff for taxi services established by law. But the island taxi drivers, spoiled by the abundance of tourists, pretend that they do not know him. And arguing with them is usually useless, even a statement to the tourist police of the island most often does not help: many islanders are related by family relations.
Therefore, before getting into a taxi at a taxi stand near the port or somewhere in the city, you should ask the driver about the approximate price of a future trip, and after getting into the car, make sure that he turns on the meter. And you shouldn't walk around the parking lot looking for more cheap option... Most likely you will not find it! Trade union solidarity is more important than personal gain. Conclusion - it is best to accept the proposed circumstances! Sometimes it is cheaper to rent a car at the nearest Rent-a-Car office.
A car ordered by phone comes with a meter already turned on, on which there may be a considerable amount - this should also be foreseen. And do not be surprised when, having taken a car at the port, you will wait a long time for the start of the trip, watching the driver pick up a full cabin of passengers - these are local rules and traditions. At the same time, the cost of the trip is not divided between clients - each newcomer will pay the full amount according to the counter. But if you rent a car as a couple, family or company, pay only one fare.
And if you have already got into the car, talk to the driver, admire the beauties of Greece and Zakynthos, take a business card from him with a phone - you see, next time he will lower the price of an “old friend” a little.
Public transport
Buses of the local island network leave from the station ΚΤΕΛ of the main city of the island to its other settlements: Laganas, Kalamaki, Argasi, Vasiliko, Tsilivi, Porto Roma, Volimes, Agrilia, passing along the road past the popular beaches described above.
The ticket price for all flights is 1.80 EUR, except for the mountain route to Volimes - 3.60 EUR.
Transport rental
It is not difficult to rent a car or a motorbike in Greece in the summer. Prices for these services are quite affordable, starting from EUR 30–40 for a car and from EUR 20 for a motorcycle. Fans of ATVs who have previously driven only on the plains, I advise you to be extremely careful - narrow mountain roads can be extremely treacherous!

Three quarters of the territory of Zakynthos is mountainous, although not the steepest and most dangerous in Greece, but nevertheless requiring careful and attentive driving.
You also need to be extremely careful in the narrow streets of mountain villages. Very often the road here, after a sharp turn, can sharply go up or down. I am constantly surprised in such places to Greek bus drivers who manage to drive through the streets, where, it would seem, even one pedestrian must give way to another in order to disperse.
