Tsminda Sameba Temple is a magnificent architectural landmark of Tbilisi

The huge temple inside strikes with its majesty and seems to be a real work of spiritual art: cozy, harmonious, calm. Numerous steps lead to the central entrance to the cathedral, from which a magnificent view of Tbilisi opens. Most of the icons that adorn the columns and walls were personally painted by Patriarch-Catholicos Ilia II. The decoration of the temple is fully customized for visitors - almost every icon has a detailed description, which allows you to get even deeper into the history and religion. Internally, the territory of the temple is divided into ground and underground parts: there are two levels underground, which can be climbed down the stairs or entered directly from the street. On one of the lower floors sarcophagi are installed, in which it is planned to reburial the remains of the Georgian kings, currently buried in the territory of Astrakhan. Deserted lower tiers look a little strange, magical and unusual due to empty sarcophagi and numerous marble columns.

On the territory of 50 hectares the residence of the Patriarch, the belfry, male monastery, Theological Academy, Theological Seminary, a hotel for parishioners-pilgrims and other facilities. The cathedral is surrounded by a park immersed in greenery, flower beds, with installed benches and fountains with drinking water for visitors. The oldest Tbilisi region is Metekhi. It was here, according to historical documents, that the first human settlement appeared on Georgian territory. In the central part of the region, the Metekhi Castle, the former residence of the kings of Georgia, which gave its name to the entire region, rises majestically. On the crest of the rock is the Church of the Assumption, erected in the 13th century during the reign of Demeter II. In the 17th century, the territory adjacent to the church was protected by the Metekhi castle. And on the other side of the Kura river, the Shah-Abbas mosque was built. In the 30-40s of the last century, the exposition of the Georgian State Museum of Art was placed in the castle. In the late 1950s, a bridge was built across the river.

Not far from the Metekhi temple, there is a monument to Vakhtang Gorgasali, the founder of the Georgian capital. The location of the monument was chosen for a reason - the founder of the city did a lot for his people, stood up to the last in defense of the built monasteries and temples.

HISTORY OF TBILISI

The first settlement on the territory of present-day Tbilisi appeared in the 4th millennium BC. In the second half of the 4th century, by order of the king Varaz-Bakur, a fortress was erected. The settlement acquired its name in 458. The Iberian ruler Vakhtang I Gorgasal liked to visit the local groves. According to legend, one day he wounded a deer, which, fleeing the pursuit, ran to a sulfur spring. The water healed the animal and it was able to hide. Seeing this, the ruler Vakhtang promised that he would create a large city on this place. He named it after the hot sulfur springs in Tbilisi, from the Georgian word "tbili". It means warm.
Under Vakhtang I, Tbilisi developed rapidly and turned into large settlement... By the will of the king, his heir Dacha, after the death of his father, moved the capital here from the city of Mtskheta and united all the lands of the eastern part of the modern state. Then it continued to grow rapidly. This was facilitated by a good location, since the settlement was located at the intersection of European and Asian trade routes. The construction of churches began. The first temple of Anchiskhati was erected, which has survived to this day.
At the beginning of the 7th century, the city was conquered by the Byzantine emperor Heraclius. But already in 653 he fell under the rule of the Arabs. For almost 100 years, the local population had to pay the new rulers one dinar from each family in exchange for safety and preservation of freedom of religion. In 736, the Arab commander Mervan II Mohammed ordered the establishment of the Tbilisi Emirate on this territory. Tbilisi became Muslim, but retained the status of the capital. The Christian population decided to leave the land en masse, heading west. The territory of the state was shrinking.
In 1122, the city was conquered by David the Builder, who laid the foundation for the Bagratid dynasty. He turned Tbilisi into the center of the new state. The times of his reign are called the "golden age". Then Tbilisi was conquered by Mongol troops. It was possible to expel them only 100 years later. Over the next centuries, the city again experienced periods of ups and downs. Several times it was destroyed to the ground, but then rebuilt.
In the 19th century, Georgia became part of the Russian Empire, and Tbilisi turned out to be the capital of the province and turned into Cultural Center... Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Griboyedov and Lev Tolstoy came to see its beauty. Industry is actively developing. Factories and factories appeared. Trade flourished. At the beginning of the 20th century, the population actively joined the labor movement. In 1922 Georgia became one of the republics of the Soviet Union. Tbilisi remained the capital and retained its status after 1991, when it was decided to secede from the USSR.

HOLIDAY IN TBILISI

Let's try to calculate: how much will the trip cost?
The cost of a ticket to Tbilisi ranges from fifty to 100 dollars one way, it depends from what point of the former Soviet Union you will fly. It is easier and cheaper to get to the city from the airport by minibus or bus from the Tbilisi-Batumi highway. I do not recommend taking a special bus, it is also called shuttle bus. On average, the cost of the airport-city trip is 10 GEL. Accommodation in a hostel in the center of Tbilisi for another 10 GEL, now per day. You can easily use the shower, kitchen (for those who like to cook), wi-fi around the clock, and the connection is excellent. Most importantly, not far from railway station, if you wish, you can travel to the nearby districts of the capital, where there are also a lot of attractions.
The most common place among tourists is the small town of Gori, where Stalin grew up. The road will cost within ten lari. The most convenient way to get there is by minibus. There, visit the Stalin Museum, the ticket price is ten lari, the full ticket is fifteen. Do not miss another attraction - the Goris-tsikhe fortress, admission is free. In the same area, there is another equally famous fortress, Uplistsikhe. The fare for a taxi is within ten GEL, do not forget to bargain with taxi drivers, in Georgia there is no way without it.
Products can be bought in any supermarket, since there are a lot of them in Tbilisi. Prices are average, similar in Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian stores. You can cook, as mentioned above, in the hostel, the kitchen is at your service.
Thus, the trip will cost no more than 150 - 200 US dollars with travel, food and excursions, together with purchases (gifts and souvenirs).

How to get there

The best way to get to Tbilisi is by plane. Ferry and railway communication, which used to be carried out through Batumi, has now been discontinued.

Writers' House in Tbilisi

Reading room

Literary evenings are held here

I learned about the existence of this place on an unusual tour, which I booked on Tripster. It is unusual because the guide was a very educated local named Tristan, who told these and other interesting things about the city in the first person. In general, I advise everyone! You will not regret! The name "" is quite justified. This is a flagship excursion, many people order it. Therefore, the House of Writers is almost the most popular place from this list.

By the way. The blog has a helpful article about. There are answers to all questions about the organization: where to book, which excursion to choose and which of the guides has the best reviews.

Place of anomalous phenomenon on Mount Mtatsminda

This place is not easy. Amazing things are happening here, which no one has given a clear explanation. The most spectacular thing is that the car rolls on the rise with the engine off. Scientists of various degrees claim the curvature of the Earth's magnetic field, which somehow affects both technology and ordinary people. I will not reveal all the cards yet. I will study this place better and try to write a separate post about it. And yes, the interesting places in Tbilisi do not end there.

Knife grinder

Each time passing along the street. Vladimir Meskhishvili, I saw this imperturbable person. No matter how I tried, I could not imagine such a character on the streets of inhospitable Moscow. Sitting proudly on his chair, the grinder is the personification of the Tiflis identity.

Rhea's Squirrels Social Cafe

The social cafe Rhea’s Squirrels is located near the lower station of the funicular leading to Mount Mtatsminda. "Rhea" is such a community of people with disabilities. In this unique place, community members can not only be socially active, but also find full-fledged work for themselves. The "Rhea" wards work in the cafe on an equal basis with other staff. The menu is mainly. Souvenirs are also sold here. Everything is done by the hands of the community members.

Lagidze waters on Rustaveli avenue

"Lagidze Waters" is a real Georgian brand that once made both American presidents and Soviet secretaries general admire. Legendary drinks were invented by Mitrofan Lagidze in 1887 and have since become an integral part of Georgian history. They were so good that even at the historic Yalta conference in 1945, there were bottles with Lagidze Water on the tables, and Franklin Roosevelt, who tasted this wonderful drink, took as many as two thousand bottles with him to America. In turn, Harry Truman was interested in whether it is possible to arrange the supply of lemonade directly to the United States? Ironically, many years later, the great-grandson of Mitrofan Lagidze, Vakhtang, became chief technologist and vice president at the Tbilisi lemonade factory, where the production of Coca-Cola was established. I have already written about this place in more detail in a separate section.

Old Cadillac

In one of the Italian courtyards of Tbilisi, there is such a Cadillac. It looks very unpresentable, but the photos are quite good for themselves. According to the legend that is passed from mouth to mouth, the owner of this giant monster once invested all his money in the purchase of an American, but there was no money left for refueling. He lived inside. But it is not exactly.

Rose Revolution Square

The Rose Revolution is a historic event, as a result of which the reformer Mikhail Saakashvili came to power in Georgia. And the Rose Revolution Square is a place that got its name in honor of these very events, respectively. Eight years after Eduard Shevardnadze left office, a sculpture of a huge metal bicycle appeared on the square in front of the Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel. The monument was erected on the personal initiative of the President of Georgia and its appearance should remind Georgians of the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The assessments of the inhabitants of Tbilisi are as ambiguous as the sculpture itself. According to my personal observations, healthy lifestyle and Georgians do not get along very well, as evidenced by the massive nature of such a phenomenon as smoking.

Old cable car building

Everyone knows the funicular that leads to Mount Mtatsminda. Typical tourist attraction. I already mentioned it on my list. However, the overwhelming majority of travelers visiting the Georgian capital do not even realize that once upon a time it was possible to climb Mount Mtatsminda by cable car. Its lower station was located on the territory of the courtyard of the Academy of Sciences and until the beginning of the 90s served people faithfully. Until a certain time ... Until in 1990 a terrible tragedy happened, which claimed the lives of 20 people. You can read more on Wikipedia.

There are already several similar media libraries in Tbilisi, but this is the most convenient in terms of logistics. It was also the very first - it was opened in 2013. Now here you can sit in the reading room, bring your child to a creative master class, connect to the World Wide Web, or just sit with a computer. Including stationary. The reading room contains books in English, Russian and Georgian. On the second floor there is a souvenir shop and a cafe - a favorite gathering place for local youth.

Bar at Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel

We go to the lobby of the Radisson Blu hotel, go up to the 18th floor and in front of us is a magnificent panoramic view of the evening city. You can go here absolutely free of charge, although ordering a glass of good wine for the sake of observing the elementary rules of decency is still worth it.

Bank of Georgia building

Interesting places Tbilisi is absolutely unusual places, the existence of which tourists do not even know. One of these is the former building of the Ministry of Highways of the Georgian SSR, and now the Bank of Georgia. It is worth inspecting this stunning building from two different points: from Iuri Gagarini street (taken from Google maps) and from the side of the embankment of President Heydar Aliyev.

Bank of Georgia building

The capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, is one oldest cities the world, since its history is more than one and a half thousand years. During this time, residents of the city managed to preserve the sights of Tbilisi , which are many centuries old and build new ones. However, the most outstanding attraction of the Georgian capital is that which is not expressed in architecture and design findings - this is the unique flavor of a multinational, tolerant city.

The young face of the old town

The old city, Avlabar, the Holy Mountain of David, a huge number of church domes towering over the city of Narikala, Metekhi and other Tbilisi sights have long become symbols of not only the capital, but also Georgia as a whole. Tourists always have something to see, listen to and feel in the city on the Kura.

On the right bank of the river, the main sights of Tbilisi are concentrated, what to see first of all , it is up to the tourists to decide, in any case, the impressions of what they saw will be remembered for a long time.

Viva-Georgia guides conduct excursions, telling about significant events and monuments. During independent travel around the city of Tbilisi, the sights can be viewed according to the guidebook.

Theater-goers and connoisseurs of modern artistic creativity can get especially great pleasure from visiting Tbilisi. There are dozens of theaters and exhibition galleries in the capital of Georgia, displaying paintings and sculptures by contemporary artists.

So, what sights in Tbilisi you should definitely visit.

Narikala (Shuris tsikhe)

The old fortress, which was built in the IV century, before the formation of the city itself, performed only a protective function. It is one of the most beloved tourist sites and a popular observation deck. Located on one of the rocks of the Sololak ridge, Narikala was repeatedly rebuilt, expanded and completed, mainly by invaders who periodically ruled the city. Tbilisi residents called her "Shuris tsikhe" - "the fortress of revenge (envy)"

Narikala fortress

For more than 400 years the fortress was owned by the Arabs, then it was captured by the Mongols. According to one of the versions, it was they who gave her the name "Narin-kala", which means "small fortress". Almost no documents and evidence have survived to this day. It is only known that in the XIV century the fortress and Tbilisi suffered from Timur, and later from the Turkmens.

In the era of the Golden Age, the church of St. Nicholas was built in the fortress, later it was destroyed, only the remains of the foundation survived.

In the 17th century, the national liberation movement took on a massive scale in Georgia. Periodically, the country was completely freed from foreign invaders, while the Persian garrison, located in the fortress, was waiting for help from Persia, since it was impossible to knock out the soldiers from there. In those years, the fortress was a multi-tiered formation, later the lower walls were destroyed, and only the upper part survived.

The church of St. Nicholas, built in the 12th century, was destroyed by an explosion in 1810. After 17 years, a powerful earthquake completely destroyed part of the walls of the fortress. In 2012, a cable car was laid to the fortress, which allows you to climb the Sololak ridge in almost a couple of minutes.

At the end of the twentieth century, a new one was built on the foundation of the once blown up church, which also bears the name of St. Nicholas.

Mtatsminda

Mount Mtatsminda

The most outstanding attraction of Tbilisi, depicted in all the photos, a description of which is given in all guidebooks, is the Holy Mountain of Mtatsminda. On the side of the mountain is the Temple of David and a pantheon of prominent figures of culture and art. There is also the grave of Alexander Griboyedov, a Russian diplomat, author of the play Woe from Wit, who was buried with his wife, Princess Nino Chavchavadze.

Cable car

The famous Tbilisi tram of the cable car, which is more than a hundred years old, rises to Mtatsminda. It was built by one of the Belgian tram companies in 1905. Similar structures have become a landmark in Odessa and Kiev. The fully renovated funicular has been in operation since 2012, after 12 years of inactivity. In 2000, the cable broke and 20 tourists miraculously escaped.

At the top of the mountain there are restaurants, an amusement and recreation park, a children's playground "Bombora". At the top of Mtatsminda, graduates of Tbilisi traditionally say goodbye to the school. The city park on the mountain is a meeting place for couples in love. There is also a low but original Tbilisi TV tower on Mtatsminda.

Sulfur baths

Being in Tbilisi and not visiting the sulfur baths is like visiting Paris and not climbing the Eiffel Tower, or not going to Notre Dame Cathedral, or taking a gondola ride in Venice.

Sulfur baths in Tbilisi

Sulfur baths are a symbol of Tbilisi, its pride and an element of city color. The peculiarity of the Tbilisi baths is that hot springs come out of the ground and have a healing effect. Hydrogen sulfide from sources kills all living things, including microbes with pathogenic bacteria on the skin.

The attendants in the baths are Azerbaijanis, they also do massage. In addition to the fact that the baths are a landmark of Tbilisi and Georgia, they are all historical monuments. Most of the baths have retained the names of their owners, the townspeople who lived in Tbilisi in the 18th-19th centuries.

Temples of Tbilisi

If you look at the sights of Tbilisi on the map, you can be surprised not only by the large number of religious institutions in the city, but also by their variety. Tbilisi is one of the most tolerant cities in the world.

Tsminda Sameba

Church of Holy Etchmiadzin

Juma Mosque

Tbilisi Synagogue Beit Rachel

During your stay in Tbilisi, you can visit such temples as:

  • Kashvetskaya, Sioni, Assumption Church (Metekhi), Anchiskhati (Church of the Nativity of the Virgin).

This is only a small part of the religious buildings of the Georgian capital.

Museums of the capital of Georgia

It would not be an exaggeration to call the capital of Georgia, especially the so-called Old Town, an open-air museum. But besides the city, guests of the Georgian capital can visit museums that store valuable artifacts and relics.

National Museum of Georgia

Art Museum

New sights of the capital

In recent years, the capital of Georgia has been actively rebuilt, and new sights have appeared on the map of Tbilisi, photos of which are adorned with advertising brochures of travel agencies.

Among the new interesting places the capital can be distinguished by an updated Rihe park... Previously, on the site of the park there was a floodplain of the Kura River, (რიყე - floodplain). Now the river bed is limited by concrete walls, and on the territory of the floodplain there is a park, representing Georgia in miniature.

Rihe park

A concert hall is “hidden” over the territory of the park in the form of an incomprehensible art object resembling two pipes.

Bridge of peace

Bridge of peace- a new glass structure connecting the left-bank city with its right-bank part. It is one of the elements of the Rihe park complex. The bridge is pedestrianized and guests of the capital and young couples like to walk along it. Advertising and music videos are often filmed on the bridge.

Tbilisi Presidential Palace

Presidential palace another new building that has become a landmark of Tbilisi. Due to its external resemblance, Tbilisi witches called it "Reichstag".
